Dave Best and Nigel Forster worked together over eighteen months in Nigel's shop. Dave photographed timber, tools, parts of instuments in the working process, the luthier working, the shop, and finished instruments.
All photos of finished instruments are in color and shows the beauty of well crafted instruments. The rest are mostly monochrome. Among the monochromes, you'll find some timeless and outstandingly vibrant pictures.
Nigel has a lot of thoughts concerning most aspects of his trade. He has written six essays, mostly about dilemmas. There is intuition up against science, beauty contra structure etc. Nigel makes it clear when it's his personal opinion, and he shares his sources.
The book is published by Nigel. What could easily have just been a glorified sales catalogue is much more. The amount of effort, thoughts and quality have lifted the book far beyond, the book stands on it's own.
It's a gem of a book. Both musicians and luthiers can get inspiration from the essays and the photos. Anyone can enjoy the aesthetics in the superb photos.
