The 1st MOMENTO RIO BANDOLIM
The MOMENTO RIO BANDOLIM 2011 will be held between November 12th and 16th in Rio de Janeiro at the Federal Justice Cultural Center and the School of Music of UFRJ. It is the first meeting in the country while placing the mandolin at both academic and in the universe of workshops and concerts, a common practice in Europe, Japan, Australia and the United States.

Best known in Brazil as a major solo instrument used in the Brazilian Choro, the mandolin also has a strong representation in a variety of classical and popular music styles. Its origins in the seventeenth century give it a venerable tradition and its versatile use includes Concert baroque, Classical and Contemporary Operas, Sonatas, Polkas, Portuguese Fados, Meringues, Progressive Rock, Bluegrass and Jazz. With its distinctive sound and its picking technique, the mandolin is an instrument that suggests the virtuosity in all musical genres where it is used.
Organized by Paulo Sá, Professor of Mandolin at UFRJ, MOMENTO RIO BANDOLIM-2011 aims to offer programs that surprise the audience through concerts and lectures with practical illustrations of the mandolin, showing the various facets of the instrument musical genres covered. As academic proposal, the meeting will generate more reflections on the practice of the mandolin in Brazil. Each activity will last approximately 01 hours and 30m, all of which will be recorded on DVD. In order to leave an educational legacy of the event, will be available approximately 20 copies to be distributed freely between institutions of musical education.
Bringing to Rio de Janeiro one of the highest quality programming, with several concerts of unprecedented nature in the country, MOMENTO RIO BANDOLIM-2011 will feature some of the best mandolin players today. The Italian Ugo Orlandi and Americans Don Stiernberg, Barry Mitterhoff and Marilynn Mair, will join the Brazilian, Joel Nascimento, Ronaldo do Bandolim, Afonso Machado, Marco César, Paulo Sa, and much more to offer everyone with the sound Mandolin nationally and internationally.
For its outstanding contribution in the national and international promotion of musical culture, MOMENTO RIO BANDOLIM-2011 is an event that will be included the annual schedule of cultural activities of Rio. The performances and activities will be free admission, and can be booked at the event's website.
